Your roof may be durable, but that does not mean that it won't develop a problem or two down the line. Detecting some of the signs that your roof is leaky is of vital importance because it will enable you to make the required roof repairs early enough to prevent costlier damages. Wet spots or stains on your ceiling are usually some of the most obvious signs of a roof leak. However, there are other significant signs to watch out for too.
There Is Algae or Mould on the Roof
Algae and mould will often grow where there is dampness. If you notice some spots of algae and mould growth on your roof, especially during the warmer months, it would be a clear indication of a moisture problem, most likely a leak. Mould is particularly dangerous because it can cause roof decay as well as health problems to your family. The extent of the growth or its distribution over the roof area will determine the right measures to take regarding repairs. For instance, if the algae or mould is spread all over the roof, which may be common with a roof approaching the end of its service life, it could be time to replace the entire roof.
Remember that even with such extensive roof leaks, water spots may still not appear in your ceiling, which is why roof leaks can sometimes be hard to detect. That's because much of the water could simply be seeping under the roof shingles.
Your Roof Shingles Are Buckling or Curling
Shingle damage is another sign that you could be dealing with a leaky roof. That's because damaged shingles will allow water to find its way through the roof. Also, shingles should lie flat on the roof. If your roof has a moisture problem due to a leak, the curling, as well as buckling of the shingles, will occur. It is for such reasons that you need to make regular inspections of your roof. Besides damaged shingles, you should also watch out for loose and missing shingles. Early detection of a potential leak problem is the key to preventing extensive water damage and costly repairs.
The Flashing Is Damaged
Similar to damaged roof shingles, damaged flashing is also a sign of a leaky roof because it will allow water to pass through. Flashing is a material, usually made of metal, which surrounds the areas where the roof sections meet, the vent pipes, chimneys and skylights. For an older roof, cracking because of drying is often the cause of damaged flashing. New roofs can also have a problem with damaged flashing if the installation was done improperly.
