Should You Try to Replace Damaged Roof Tiles Yourself?

Have you recently suffered through a significant windstorm in your area? If you have, you've been poking around the outside of your house to see if all is well and whether you sustained any damage or not. Your eagle eye has noticed an issue with one or more of the tiles up on the roof and, from this distance, it doesn't appear to be too bad.

You may make a mental note to deal with that yourself this weekend, as you have a nice, sturdy ladder in the garage that you can use to gain access. However, assuming that you have never tackled this type of work before and are not an expert, why should you leave this to those who know what they're doing, in case you cause even more damage than was already there?

How Hard Can It Be?

You may think that laying tiles on a roof is a simple process, as you have watched skilled tradesmen work before, but remember that they are both trained and experienced in what they do and will certainly make it look easy. Don't underestimate the dangers of working at height as well and especially if you don't have any safety equipment apart from the proverbial wing and a prayer.

Repair, Don't Replace

Having said that, it is almost always cheaper to repair damaged roof tiles than it is to replace and if you do want to replace, you may not be able to accurately match the tiles that surround the newcomers. This is because tile roofs are meant to last for decades at a time, and as there are different types of tile available, it can be challenging for even a professional to make a match. Also, the colour may not be exactly the same, as even though the contractor may pick from the correct batch, remember that the tiles on your roof have been subject to exposure and will undoubtedly have faded over time.

Always Be Careful

If you do decide to go ahead, be very careful when you are walking on the roof, as it is easy to break tiles just by putting too much weight on them. If you're clumsy, you will indeed cause more damage by simply being up there, and if you don't break the tiles themselves, you may cause issues with the waterproofed ridges that surround. In this way, you may cause a leak where there was not one before and may wish that you had called the expert in right from the beginning.
